Anton Chigurh

Picture
Anton Chirgurh is the anti-hero with the movie. We know nothing about his past, but we do know that he is a psychotic killer who will kill anyone who gets in the way of his objectives. Hired to recover the stolen drug money, he eventually kills his employers and looks for the money himself. He carries a silenced shotgun and a cattle gun (shown in the picture) around at all times whether to kill or break into people's homes. If he finds people who don't have a good enough reason to die, he tosses a coin which decides their fate. Anton seems to have his own set of morals. He considers himself a hand of fate, almost godlike; one that exacts that which is supposed to happen to people. In the movie, you notice that Anton avoids getting blood on his person by being calculated and precise. Also, he checks that his boots are clean before leaving his murder victims.

He has created this illusion that harm cannot come to him and that taking the money for himself is part of this "fate" that he decides for himself and for others he comes in contact with. He has forgotten that he is a mortal human being.

"Only though forgetfulness can man ever acheive the illusion of possessing truth."
-Friedriche Nietzsche

However, despite his calculated lifestyle, he gets shot by Llewelyn in the hotel showdown clip and also gets into a car wreck. Even this supposed hand of fate, cannot escape the effects of his greed.

Anton Chigurh: And you know what's going to happen now. You should admit your situation. There would be more dignity in it.
Carson Wells: You go to hell.
Anton Chigurh: Let me ask you something. If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?
Carson Wells: Do you have any idea how goddamn crazy you are?
Anton Chigurh: You mean the nature of this conversation?
Carson Wells: I mean the nature of you.
