Postmodernism within NCFOM

Both Anton and Llewelyn have created an illusion that they can actually take the money without no harmful consequences affecting them. While Anton's illusion of himself is more god-like, Llewelyn's is more along the lines of a hardened veteran who can weather any difficulty. They have created their own version of truth. In the words of Jakobson, Their greed has become their "dominant."

"The dominant may be defined as the focusing component of a work of art: it rules, determines, and transforms the remaining components. It is the dominant which guarantees the integrity of the structure...a poetic work [is] a structured system...a regularly ordered heirarchichal set of artistic devices. Poetic evolution is a shift in this heirarchy...the image of...literary history substantially changes; "

Roman Jakobson

Notice how Jakobson says that it "rules, determines, and transforms the remaining components!" It changes the characters whole outlook on their current predicament and in a way, it blinds them from reality. Now we can agree with Carson's line in the movie where he tells Anton, "Do you have any idea how goddamn crazy you are?"

Not only can Jakobson's idea of the dominant be applied to individual characters in the movie, but also to the entire movie itself. The title in this work, as has been mentioned before, suggests that the traditional good guy prevailing and the bad guy being defeated can no longer be applied to every modern situation. In some cases the bad guy does prevail and the good guy is defeated.
